Shot blasting is a method used to clean, deburr and surface condition castings. RD Castings offer two types of shot blasting, wheel blasting and air blasting.

Wheel Blasting is an airless blast operation that uses a wheel with centrifugal force to propel the abrasive material against the casting. The wheel spins at high velocity and is a high efficiency blasting operation with quick cycle times. Wheel blasting utilizes metallic abrasives (such as stainless steel shot) that are available in different hardness’s. Wheel blasting is an automated process.

Air Blasting works using suction that lifts abrasive media to the blasting gun. High-pressure compressed air creates suction on the side of air injection. This suction is then used to lift the abrasives that are mixed with the high velocity compressed air to create a soft blast. Air blasting is usually a semi-automated or manual process.

Many of our customers have gone on to use this as a decorative finish for their products.

Benefits of Shot blasting:

  • Excellent for pre treatment finishing
  • Effective way of deburring castings
  • Can be used as a decorative finish
